Janury 2023 Seniors of the Month

We are proud to announce Meera Pradeepan as SHS's Senior of the Month.

    Meera Pradeepan

Meera has embraced the spirit of our school and, in doing so, established herself as a person of influence in the SHS community. It is quite easy to see why: Meera exudes charismatic confidence that allows one to feel comfortable in trusting her abilities.

Over the past three and a half years at Schaumburg High School, Meera has time and again demonstrated her ability to be trustworthy, engaging, resourceful, and determined in much of what she does. Meera excels academically and takes her studies very seriously, an approach that has served her well in the classroom. She has earned numerous academic accolades, including receiving high honor roll status all four years at SHS, as well as earning recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. Outside of the classroom, Meera has been an integral member of the Saxon Community, with involvement in, among others, the Student Wellness Committee, Math Team and National Honor Society.

Not one to be satisfied with just being a part of the group, Meera has taken leadership responsibilities as VP and President of Student Council, Spirit Secretary and Team Captain of the Speech Team, as well as serving on the Core Executive Team for Saxons LEAD. While she will humbly deflect credit for her work, her most notable accomplishments have come in service to others. During her Junior year, Meera was named the 2022 Village of Schaumburg Youth Volunteer of the Year, for her work with sexual violence prevention and education, along with coordinating efforts through our Student Wellness Committe. She is also a collaborator in the development of the REACH Act (SD818) with Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

With all that goes on in her life, Meera has still found time to create curriculum and teach advanced/competition math to local students through the Midwest Math Circle. When asked how she maintains balance and remains motivated within her busy life, Meera states “I aim to consistently evaluate what is most pressing and best aligns with my priorities, even if it isn’t always academics— hanging out with friends isn’t nearly as important as studying for a big physics test, but I’ll always choose spending the evening with my family over an optional worksheet. Creating balance helps me stay motivated as I understand that for me, fulfillment demands both a rich personal life and a successful academic experience.”

Meera truly has everything it takes to be extraordinary in her life and career: a relentless quest for knowledge, an endearing ability to make any individual feel like they’re the only person that matters at that moment, and a humility which comes only with a confidence in her own self-worth. Meera plans to study Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and there is no question that Meera will find success in whatever she does in life. But, it’s not just her drive for academic excellence, nor her leadership in numerous extra- and co-curricular activities that will define Meera’s future. It is her ability to connect with people on a personal level that will help Meera as she takes the next step in her life.

Congratulations to Meera Pradeepan on the well-deserved honor of being named Schaumburg High School’s February Senior of the Month.

We are proud to announce Mhone Bogonko as SHS's Senior of the Month.

    Mhone Bogonko

Mhone Bogonko is a uniquely skilled leader across academics, activities, and athletics at Schaumburg High School. In the classroom, Mhone is recognized for his commitment to his studies, consistently giving his best effort across all subject areas. He is always willing to take ona new challenge and shows great humility amidst his successes. Mhone is well respected by his peers and staff alike for his work ethic and positive approach to learning.

Mhone has excelled in his co-curricular involvement throughout high school. Within the SHS Band program, Mhone has been a member of the Wind Symphony since his sophomore year and also plays in the Symphony Orchestra. He has earned numerous honors as a performer, including multiple Superior ratings and a “Best of Day” recognition at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Festival and membership into the ILMEA District 7 Band (three times), District 211 Honor Band, and District 211 Honors Orchestra. These accomplishments alone place Mhone into an elite group of musicians in the area. Additionally, Mhone has been a three-year section leader in the SHS Band and a member of both the Tri-M Music Honor Society and Musical Pit Orchestra.

Aside from music, Mhone’s other passion throughout high school has been his involvement in soccer. Mhone has played for the Sockers FC of the MLS Next league throughout high school, competing in matches across the country on a regular basis. He has played in several international matches and this past December was selected to play in the MLS Next national “Best of” match in Indio, California. Outside of school and soccer, Mhone is also highly involved as in his church community and tutors refugees in the Chicago area.

When asked for a highlight from his time at SHS, Mhone reflected on his first band concert back from the pandemic in the spring of 2021. “It was nice to see how even when separated due to remote learning, our music connected us and we continued to play at such a high level. It was a great way to come back from the pandemic and enjoy the camaraderie of my friends and appreciate how great it is to be working together in school.” When asked how he has achieved so much in his time in high school, Mhone commented, “I try to keep a positive attitude, stay in the moment, and meet each challenge confidently knowing that it will work out.” Upon graduation, Mhone plans to major in computer science and play soccer at the collegiate level. We look forward to following his accomplishments in the years to come.

Congratulations, Mhone Bogonko, on being named Schaumburg High School Senior of the Month!

We are proud to announce Patrick Dima as SHS's Senior of the Month.

    Mhone Bogonko

Through his time at Schaumburg, Patrick has demonstrated excellence both in the classroom as well as his many extracurricular and athletic pursuits. He is a natural leader and has contributed in many ways to our school community. In the classroom, Patrick consistently displays excellence.

He has been recognized for his excellence by being named a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction, and has received an  IHSA Scholastic Achievement Award. Patrick is not the loudest student in the classroom, but his dedication to excellent shows throughout all aspects of his work. His work is consistently of the highest quality and his classmates hold him in the highest regard. He is truly a leader among his classmates.

Patrick credits his success to his internal drive as well as the support he’s received from his family and friends when his busy schedule becomes especially challenging. Outside of the classroom, Patrick also embraces challenge. A member of the Varsity swim and water polo teams through all of his high school career, he has been Team Captain for both teams for two years. He has set team relay records at the school level and medaled in Conference and Sectional meets. Patrick also helps his team medal outside the pool, helping the Math Team place second at the Conference meet. He is also a member of NHS, Rho Kappa, Newspaper, and SALT.

Throughout his involvement runs the dedication to service, and thus it is no surprise that when asked what experience has had the most positive impact on him, he notes events such as St. Baldricks and the Blood Drive, when he sees events that “unite the Saxons in an unparalleled way.” Patrick plans to major in Computer Science when he moves to college next year. His dedication to excellence and willingness lead have made him an invaluable member of our student body.  We are proud to announce Patrick Dima as February Senior of the Month.

Congratulations, Patrick Dima, on being named Schaumburg High School Senior of the Month!
