Schaumburg High School is proud to recognize Mia Vollkommer as September 2020 Senior of the month
Mia Vollkommer is a dedicated, positive, and caring student leader in the Schaumburg High School community, excelling across academics and extracurricular activities. Throughout her time at SHS, Mia has challenged herself with rigorous accelerated and Advanced Placement coursework in many departments, finding enjoyment in the process of learning on a daily basis. Mia brings valuable insights to discussions and is well respected by her peers for both her work ethic and humility. Although she rarely seeks the spotlight, Mia’s detailed approach to learning truly makes her stand out in the classroom. She has been recognized academically as a Seal of Biliteracy recipient (for Japanese and English), AP Scholar with Distinction, and National Merit Semifinalist. Mia was also selected as the Village of Schaumburg’s Distinguished Young Woman of 2020 and is a member of the SHS Homecoming Rose Arbor Court.
Mia Vollkommer has experienced much success through her extra- and co-curricular involvement at Schaumburg High School. As a member of the Cross Country and Math Teams since her freshman year, Mia brings great energy to practices and competitions. Mia is also a member of the National Honor Society and regularly volunteers at the Marklund Waswond Center, Spring Valley Nature Center, and as a peer jurist. Mia is highly involved in music both at SHS and in the Schaumburg community. A four-year member of the SHS Band program and Musical, Mia currently plays flute in the Wind Symphony and earned selection into the District 211 Honor Band as a junior. She is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and a two-year Section Leader on the Band Leadership Team, mentoring fellow musicians and helping them reach their fullest potential. Mia also currently plays in the Spring Valley Concert Band, a local ensemble consisting of the student, amateur, and professional musicians throughout the northwest suburbs.
Mia reflects that her role as a Flute Section Leader in the SHS Marching Band has had a significant impact on her personal growth. This opportunity allowed her to gain confidence in herself and find ways to make others feel welcome in the band and SHS community. Mia remarks that by serving in this role, “it was clear to me what kind of person I wanted to be.” Mia stays motivated by making time for what she enjoys, as well as remembering the goals she has set in her life. Upon graduation, Mia plans to major in Chemical Engineering. Given her outstanding work over the past four years, we look forward to following Mia’s continuing success at the collegiate level and beyond.
Congratulations, Mia Vollkommer, on being recognized as Schaumburg High School’s September 2020 Senior of the Month!
