Business Degree in 3
High School District 211 partnered with Harper College and Northern Illinois University (NIU) through the support of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation to create a sequence of courses that allow students to earn a business degree in just three years after high school graduation. For the past year, representatives from all three institutions have worked with students and families to learn how to improve and accelerate degree completion. Now students can earn one of the following eight NIU business degrees in three years: Accountancy, Entrepreneurship & Social Responsibility, Finance, Leadership & Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Business Administration, and Operations & Information Management.
Students can earn at least 20 early college credits towards a NIU business degree during high school by leveraging dual credit and Advanced Placement (AP) course opportunities. District 211 dual credit courses within the pathway include College Composition, Fundamentals of Speech, Spanish 4, French 4, Intermediate Japanese 2, and Biology 2, with dual credit in the Business Calculus course coming soon. Advanced Placement courses that could earn students early college credit in the “Degree in Three” pathway include AP English, AP Spanish, AP French, AP Chinese, AP German, AP Psychology, AP Biology, and AP Calculus.
The Harper Promise Scholarship program provides eligible students the opportunity to earn their associate degree free of charge. Using the Harper Promise program, the first time families would pay for a college course is when students are officially enrolled at NIU. “Degree in Three” students would spend one year at Harper College to complete their associate degree, in addition to prerequisites for NIU’s School of Business. “Degree in Three” students have guaranteed admission to NIU, where they would choose from one of the eight business tracks to complete their degree.
