Debate (Public Forum)

Public Forum/Student Congress
Debate Club's aim is to empower students with the skills of expressing their beliefs clearly and concisely, public speaking and effective communication in a formal setting, and staying aware of current events in the world. The Congressional Debate team reenacts the legislative process. Team members write bills, give speeches, and debate bills with teams from other schools. There is one meet each month and student moderators run the sessions. Awards are voted on by the student debaters and presented at the end of each meet. Public Forum works with similar topics, while researching current publications and news sources. Teams of two debaters speak to defend (pro) or oppose (con) the assigned topic. Both forms of debate are an Illinois High School Association activity and debaters have a chance to advance to the state championship meet at the end of the season.
