• Principal's Message - Schaumburg High School, December 2022

It is hard to believe, but we are quickly approaching the end of the semester! Thank you all for a great first semester thus far and coming out to support all our students that have been involved in various extracurricular activities. I would also like to thank you for all the support you have provided your student to support them academically this year.

We will wrap up the semester with final exams on December 20th, 21st, and 22nd . The exam schedule is included within this month’s newsletter. As we approach the end of the semester, I encourage you to have conversations with your child regarding their plan for preparing for final exams. Below are helpful tips for your student(s) to think about when preparing for final exams.

    • Please remind your student(s) to check Infinite Campus and check-in with their teachers to determine if they are missing any assignments. Being proactive and getting caught up prior to final exam week results in less stress as students are able to increase the amount of time dedicated to preparing for final exams.
    • It is important for students to pace themselves when preparing for final exams. Research has shown that students that spread out their studying with a longer-term plan are more successful than students that wait to cram for exams. Studying for a shorter period each day over a longer period is the recommended method for preparing for final exams. If students have not started studying already, please encourage them to do so!
    • Students should reflect on which courses they have found the most challenging. These are courses that they may need to allocate more time to in preparing for final exams.
    • As students develop their plan it can also be helpful to review the topics of each course. What have been the most challenging units in the course? Reflecting on the course syllabus and assignments that they have completed this year can help students in identifying these areas.
    • Students should take advantage of tutoring opportunities before, during, and after school. If they are unsure of opportunities for a specific course or subject area students are encouraged to reach out to their classroom teachers regarding availability for assistance.
    • Looking for a quiet place to study? The media center is open to students for quiet study Monday through Thursday from 3 pm – 5 pm. Worried about a ride home? Schaumburg High School offers late buses Monday through Friday at 4:10 pm and 5:25 pm for students wishing to stay to take advantage of after school activities, including quiet study in the media center. The Media Center will have extended hours and be open from 3 – 8 pm on the following dates: December 12 – December 15 and December 19.
    • As you are preparing for final exams a healthy lifestyle has many benefits. Healthy eating and exercise have been shown to have cognitive benefits.
    • Getting plenty of sleep going into final exams can also lead to increased success on final exams.

    Sincerely,

    Brian Harlan
    Principal
