Schaumburg High School Robert O. Atcher Chapter National Honor Society
NHS is a recognition society for Juniors and Seniors who have demonstrated character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The National Honor Society is a national recognition society founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to recognize students who display outstanding character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Members are invited to join based on their demonstration of these characteristics.
How members are selected:
Interested Juniors and Seniors who meet the grade requirements as determined by the Faculty Council (3.35 unweighted or 4.0 weighted) may submit an application during the fall application window, available the middle of August of each school year. The staff is invited to evaluate the applicants, and then the Faculty Council reviews the applications and evaluations and determines which students should be invited to membership. Applicants are evaluated on the four pillars of NHS:
● Scholarship
Per chapter guidelines as determined by the Faculty Council, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.35 unweighted or 4.0 weighted● Service
This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.● Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.● Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.Responsibilities of Membership:
Once Inducted in the Fall, students are expected to maintain the standards under which the Faculty Council selected them to membership. Meetings are bimonthly before school, and members are expected to participate in NHS activities throughout the year, including facilitating the school blood drives, fall food drive, and other special projects. All member communication is conducted through Schoology.
