Afternoon Academic Support

  • Township High School District 211 Afternoon Academic Support

The purpose of the afternoon academic support time is to offer students the ability to access unique learning opportunities that our current ISBE restrictions may limit or prevent during their morning class time. Each District 211 academic department has developed learning experiences that support their curriculum. These experiences are offered through a sign-up system to ensure that social distancing and safety guidelines can be followed. Some afternoon options are more general in nature, including math tutoring labs, reading and writing support, or quiet study areas, while others are specific to courses that students are enrolled in. These specific offerings, which include the ability to complete experiments in science labs, or access to manufacturing equipment, are only available for students enrolled in the courses that include the specialized content.

Students can learn more about afternoon academic support opportunities in the FHS Tutoring course in their school Schoology account.

There are limitations on how many students can be present in each area due to social distancing, therefore students are encouraged to sign-up as early as possible for their preferred opportunity. Students can access District 211 transportation to the school building through a mid-day bus route that will run Monday through Friday. Because of staff professional learning opportunities, only quiet study areas will be offered Friday afternoons.

Academic Support

  • At Fremd High School, we strive to provide academic support to all students, both inside and outside the classroom in order to enhance student success. While students are always encouraged to seek assistance from their academic teacher, a variety of resources are available for students seeking additional supports. Most teachers have an electronic learning management system such as Schoology that allows students to keep updated about class assignments and expectations.

Students are expected by both state and national policies to attain a certain level of achievement. Students who are not meeting or not on track to meet these standards may be assigned additional academic support to allow them to meet these standards.

    Counselor

Students work with their counselor to develop a personal academic plan based on their career interests and post-secondary goals. The counselor can also recommend other academic supports based on individual students' needs.

    Tutoring

Individual and small group tutoring in various subjects throughout the school day. Students are able to drop in for extra support as needed to ensure academic success. Students should ask their teacher for additional assistance or stop in the departmental offices to seek support in areas where regular tutors are not available.

Teachers in Math, Science and English are available throughout the school day in the Tutoring Center which is located in the Library. Tutoring is available Tuesday through Thursday until 4:00pm in the Tutoring Center.

    Media Center (Library)

The Fremd High School Library is a great location in the school where students can come to study, do research, check out books, or use the many available technology resources. The Media Center also maintains an extensive listing of online research databases, available to students both on and off campus over the Internet. Students can also access hundreds of eBooks on their iPads and smartphones using District 211's Overdrive and Open Ebooks online libraries.  The media Center is open from 7:00am - 5:25pm Monday through Thursday. The media center closes at 3:25pm on Fridays.

    Test Make-Up

Students have access to make up tests and quizzes in our test make up room from 7:00am - 4:00pm on all normal school days. Test Make-Up is located across from the Main Gym.

    Required Supports

Students are expected by both state and national policies to attain a certain level of achievement, students who are not meeting or not on track to meet these standards may be assigned additional academic support to allow them to meet these standards.

    Problem Solving Team (PST)

Each PST consists of an administrator, counselors, and a psychologist and/or social worker.  This team format provides an opportunity for staff to collaborate and to provide support for students in the areas of attendance, behavior, social-emotional, and academics.  Teams meet weekly to review data and identify necessary supports. For additional information on the Problem Solving Team process, please contact your student's counselor or administrator.

    Guided Study Hall

Students may be assigned to a Guided Study Hall.  This study hall provides students with extra support in a smaller setting. In addition, students will work to develop study, organizational, and other academic skills.

    SAT Prep

Fremd offers free after-school SAT preparation weekly. Click here for more information.

In addition, students identified through our search process or requesting training for the math portion of the SAT may be assigned to second semester lunch preparation program where they will receive additional strategies and practice opportunities.

    Athletic Study Hall

Student-athletes may be assigned to an Athletic Study Hall if their grades fall below the district standard. This study hall is designed to give your child a quiet work environment and access to additional resources to support academic success.
