Citing Research Databases

  • The current (8th) version of MLA rules does identify some optional elements when creating citations.  For example, information about prior publications, formerly required, is now optional.  This information is accessible by using the URL, which is now required as part of the citation.  The date of access is also optional.  (Although it tends to be more important to include if there is nothing else in the citation that specifies a date.)

If you are copying and pasting from a Citation Tool, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE ALL TITLES OF DATABASES AND MAJOR WORKS (titles of databases or titles of books/magazines) ARE IN ITALICS.  If you are creating your own citation, check with your teacher about the necessary elements.
