Transportation

High School District 211 operates one of the largest school-owned bus fleets in Illinois, with nearly 160 school buses and 40 vans in operation on school days and weekends.  More than 9,500 students are transported over 7,000 miles each school day for regular and special education classes, as well as service to several remote education sites.  Transportation also is provided for school athletic and activity events, academic/vocational programs to off-campus work sites, Harper College, field trips, and other local areas.

A crew of nine mechanics help keep the District’s buses and vans on the road.  Five of the nine District 211 mechanics are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, a professional certification group that certifies professionals and shops in the automotive repair and service industry, while the other four mechanics are working towards their national certification.

High School District 211 is proud to provide these transportation services with its own crew of drivers, totaling 126 bus and 64 van drivers with 27 aides.  All District 211 drivers are licensed by the Illinois Secretary of State and by the Illinois State Board of Education, meeting strict requirements which includes obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License, completing an eight-hour school bus safety course and a two-hour yearly refresher course, passing an annual physical examination and random drug/alcohol testing.

High School District 211 bus drivers are members of the “Fleetwatch” team.  Fleetwatch is a volunteer program where employees who operate radio-equipped vehicles act as an additional set of “eyes and ears” within a community, working with local law enforcement agencies.
