Immigration FAQs

Question Answer
Does the District allow immigration officials to be inside schools? Yes, agents are permitted in areas of the school that are open to the public, such as main offices or entry vestibules. Access to hallways, classrooms, buses, or other restricted spaces requires District authorization. The same rules apply at all school-related events held on school property.
Does District 211 document a student’s immigration status? No. District 211 neither requests nor gathers information about a family’s immigration status.
What happens if someone requests information about a student or their attendance status? All external requests to confirm a student’s attendance, access a student, or obtain student information are handled through the District Office for legal review and direction. This process follows established District protocols for any adult seeking student access without a court order or parental consent.
Is student information protected in any way legally? Yes. Student information is protected under federal and state law, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Illinois School Student Records Act (ISSRA). These laws limit the release of student records unless legally authorized or approved by a parent or guardian.
What can a student do if they have questions or concerns? Students may schedule a confidential appointment through the Student Services button on their District iPad or by visiting the Student Services Office.
How can a student alert school staff to a concerning incident? Safety Reporting Buttons are available on the District 211 homepage and every school homepage for quick access to support and reporting tools.
