E-Bikes & E-Scooters

As electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) have become increasingly popular, the District has evaluated safety concerns associated with their use and presence on school property.  

Effective October 13, 2026, students will no longer be permitted to bring e-bikes or e-scooters onto District 211 property. Additionally, visitors will not be permitted to operate these devices while on any District 211 property.

This applies to all e-bikes and e-scooters, regardless of classification, speed, motor size, or whether the motor is turned off. E-bikes and e-scooters may not be ridden, walked, parked, stored, or charged on school grounds, including campus roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, athletic areas, and bicycle racks.

This change supports the District's commitment to providing safe campuses and addresses safety concerns related to the speed and acceleration of these devices, heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic on our campuses, and potential fire and electrical risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. 

What You should know

• Traditional, non-motorized bicycles will continue to be permitted. Students must walk their bicycles while on school property and secure them at designated bicycle racks.

• Students who bring an e-bike or e-scooter onto District property will be directed to contact a parent or guardian to arrange for its prompt removal. Repeated or unsafe violations may result in school disciplinary action. 

• District-approved mobility devices used as part of an accessibility accommodation are not affected by this restriction.

• Families currently relying on an e-bike or e-scooter for their students' transportation should make alternative arrangements before October 13, 2026.

• Statewide regulations governing e-bikes that will take effect January 1, 2027. The regulations include restrictions on these devices, the ages at which they can be operated, and significantly increase the legal consequences for violations.
