BOARD RECOGNITIONS: 5-26-2016

RECOGNITIONS AT THE May 26, 2016 MEETING

Daily Herald Academic Team for 2015-2016
The Daily Herald sponsored its 15th-annual Academic Team for 2015-2016. This honor recognizes high school students who have consistently excelled in their studies, as well as made a contribution to their schools through academic activities. High School District 211 had five students named to the 10-member first team: Shriram Chennakesavalu (top left) from James B. Conant High School; Srinivas Cherukuri (top right) from Schaumburg High School; Shreyas Gandlur (top center) from Hoffman Estates High School; Kiera Gavin (bottom right) from Palatine High School; and Jiamin Huang (bottom left) from William Fremd High School. These outstanding students have been invited this evening to receive Board of Education recognition.

 Golden Apple Scholars - 2016
Two High School District 211 students have been invited to receive Board of Education recognition this evening for being named 2016 Golden Apple Scholars by the Golden Apple Foundation. Each year, thousands of Illinois high school students who are interested in entering the teaching profession are nominated for this prestigious distinction, of which just 200 were selected in an intense and competitive process. In return for the extensive professional, personal, and financial support they receive, Golden Apple Scholars must attend an Illinois college or university that participates in the program and agree to teach for five years in an Illinois school of need upon graduation. These students represent the “best and brightest young men and women in Illinois.”

William Fremd High School seniors Daniel Classon and James Feng have been selected as 2016 Presidential Scholar Semifinalists by the President’s Special Commission. The United States Presidential Scholar Program was established in 1964 in order to recognize some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the country’s highest honors for high school students. Each scholar chosen has demonstrated leadership, scholarship, contribution to school and community, or exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. Both students have been invited this evening to receive Board of Education recognition.

 Joanne Lee
Schaumburg High School junior student Joanne Lee earned an award in a national writing contest sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and she has been invited to receive recognition from the Board of Education. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing began in 1957, and today are the most prestigious national recognition in writing for high school students.

 ACT Highest Scorers - 2016
Three High School District 211 students recently earned a 36 on the American College Test (ACT) examination, the highest possible composite score. Each has been invited to receive Board of Education recognition for this outstanding achievement: Palatine High School students Daniel Rosenburg (right) and Emily Steinebrey (center); and James B. Conant High School student NitinShankar Subramanian (left). The ACT, which is taken by nearly 60 percent of America’s college-bound students, is comprised of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. Each test is scored on scale of 1-36, and a student’s score is the average of the four test scores. On average, less than one percent of all ACT test takers earns a top score.
