Illinois Seal of Biliteracy

  • Township High School District 211 students can earn the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating high levels of proficiency in English and an additional language. Students who earn the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy will have it indicated on their transcript. Illinois public universities will accept the State Seal of Biliteracy as equivalent to 2 years of foreign language coursework taken during high school.     The AAPPL or STAMP language exams are administered in March, either in-person or online. Current languages available through AAPPL or Stamp include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Students interested in registering for the AAPPL or STAMP assessment should see their counselor by the end of January. An invoice will be sent through MySchoolBucks in February.  

    If your student attends a language school that administers one of the ISBE approved assessments to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, please have a representative from the language school send the student services director the assessment results. The assessment must be completed while your student attends high school.  

    The official Seal of Biliteracy will be available for pickup during the summer in the Student Services Department.  

    To be eligible for the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy, a high school student must demonstrate proficiency in English and an additional language by meeting the following criteria during high school: 

      

    English AND Additional Language
    • Earn an ACCESS composite score of at least 4.8 on ACCESS; 

    OR

    • Earn the ACT college-ready benchmark for the English subject area test or achieve a composite score of at least 21 on the ACT; 

    OR

    • Earn an Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of at least 480 on the SAT; 

    OR

    • Earn AP English Language and Composition exam score of 4; 

    OR

    • Earn GPA of 3.0 in English transitional or dual course credit (E423 Intro to Rhetoric or E625 College Composition).

    OR

    • Earn a minimum score of I-5 on the ACTFL’s Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) exam.
    • Have earned a 4 or 5 in the Advanced Placement language exam - Spanish, Chinese (Traditional or Simplified), French, German, Italian, or Japanese; 

    OR

    • Earn a minimum score of I-5 on the ACTFL’s Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) exam. The following languages can be assessed with the AAPPL exam: Arabic, Chinese (Traditional or Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

    OR

    • Earn Intermediate High on the STAMP exam (Polish, Hebrew and Hindi).

    STAMP and AAPPL remote testing requirements:

    STAMP - AT HOME:  Live Remote Proctor (Polish and Hebrew Only)

    • Students take the assessment at home and must use a Windows or Mac computer. No iPads, Tablets, or Chromebooks are permitted.
    • Students will also need a second device (which may be a phone or tablet) in which a live remote proctor from the AVANT company will use to monitor you and the room as you take the test.  

    AAPPL - AT HOME:  COMPUTER-BASED PROCTOR (All Languages Other than Polish/Hebrew)

    • Students take the assessment at home and must use a Windows or Mac computer, no tablets or Chromebooks are permitted. 
    • Please review the AAPPL Computer Proctoring Student Guide for testing requirements. 

    AAPPL - AT HOME:  PARENT/GUARDIAN PROCTOR

    • Students take the assessment at home and may use any computer or tablet, including Chromebooks, iPads, etc.  
    • A parent/guardian must agree to oversee the student while s/he takes the assessment at home.  The parent/guardian must sign the AAPPL At-Home Testing and Proctoring agreement and return it to the Student Services Office.
