English Language Learner Program Models

 

District 211 serves English Language learners through both Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) and Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) program models.

 

What is TBE? 

TBE is a program model that is defined by the state of Illinois as required for groups of 20 or more children from the same language group who attend the same school and who have been identified as needing second language services based upon their scores on the state language proficiency test. The goal of this model is to help children acquire the English skills required to succeed in an English-only program. It provides initial instructional support in the students’ native language and transitions to the use of all English for instruction.

 

What does TBE look like in District 211?

District 211 has TBE programs for Spanish-speaking students at each of its schools.  Students enroll in English as a Second Language classes to continue development of English language skills.  Students also take sheltered content area classes, in which language support is provided to assist students.  Students participate in mainstream classes that are not language intensive, such as PE and art.  Students also have a resource class in which academic and language support is provided.  Students may also take Spanish for Native Speakers classes to continue development of Spanish language oral and literacy skills.

 

What is TPI?

TPI is a model that serves students who are in a school attended by 19 or fewer students of the same language group who qualify for the second language program. Native language support may or may not be given.

 

What does TPI look like in District 211?

Each school in District 211 offers a TPI program. Students enroll in English as a Second Language classes to continue development of English language skills.  Students also take sheltered content area classes, in which instruction is modified to support student understanding. Students participate in mainstream classes that are not language intensive, such as PE and art.  Students also have a resource class in which academic support is provided.
